Jem
Jem is a tiny little soul with a heart full of fear, and every day she reminds us how much courage it takes just to exist in a world that has always felt too big and too scary. This sweet Cocker Spaniel came to us from a breeder in Ireland, and from the moment she arrived, she would shrink into herself, curling up in the back of her kennel, trembling, watching the world pass her by without daring to join in.
She has never known what it is to feel safe, to feel loved, or to have a home of her own. Yet even in her fear, Jem is trying. Over the past few weeks, with patience, gentle hands, and quiet words, she has started to let the tiniest glimpses of trust shine through. She still trembles at new experiences and struggles with walking on a harness, but if you take things slowly, she will let you stroke her, and if you are very, very gentle, she will settle into your arms, soft and trusting, as if saying, “I want to believe in you.”
Out in the yard, Jem relaxes a little, following her doggy friends, learning from their confidence. She needs a kind, calm, confident dog in her new home to help her navigate the world and show her that life can be gentle, loving, and safe.
Jem has never lived in a home before. Everything from house training to the simplest daily routines will be completely new to her, and she will need a family who can go at her pace, giving her the patience and understanding she has waited for all her life. She has some hormonal alopecia and a few minor scratches, but those are nothing compared to the tender heart that has been waiting so long for love.
Every time we see her take a tiny step forward, it feels like a miracle. Every small moment of trust she gives us is precious, a reminder of how fragile and brave she is. Jem deserves a home where she will never again have to be afraid, a family who will hold her close and let her blossom into the beautiful, loving companion she longs to be.
This little heartbreaker has waited far too long. She has already shown she can try, she can trust, she can love. All she needs now is someone willing to show her that the world isn’t such a scary place and in return, she will give a lifetime of loyalty, tenderness, and gratitude that words can scarcely describe.
Gem has mild bilateral ectropion, but it isn’t causing any discharge, inflammation, or discomfort, so no treatment is needed. She has a negligible click in her right patella, which doesn’t affect her mobility and may improve with gentle exercise. She has had a dental, and otherwise her skin is healthy.
