Douglas
Douglas has come to us from a breeder to find his forever home. When he first arrived, he was a very scared little boy who felt completely overwhelmed by this big new world. With time, patience, and gentle care, he has started to make some wonderful progress, especially since moving into a foster home where he is learning all about home comforts.
Douglas hadn’t had much socialisation before, and at first he didn’t understand that human hands could be kind. Now, he will happily lick still fingers, wait patiently for a lunchtime treat, and even take it gently from your hand. He has begun to join in with family life, curling up in a soft bed nearby, snoozing on the sofa with the other dogs in the evening, and even enjoying exploring the garden. He has also put on some much-needed weight and his coat condition has already improved, showing how far a bit of love and a good diet can go.
In foster, Douglas has surprised us with his playful side. He collects soft toys in his bed, has even chased after a rolling bowl, and is showing us that beneath the worry is a boy ready to enjoy life. He will still run to his bed when you need to pick him up, but he now stays still and calm once there. He is tolerating gentle grooming with the help of cheese treats, comes when called, and is doing well with house training, going out into the garden during the day and learning to use training pads at night.
Douglas is still very wary of hands moving quickly, so his new family will need to be understanding of his background and give him the time he needs to build trust. He must have at least one kind and confident resident dog to take him under their wing and show him that life is safe and happy. His new home will need to be calm and adult-only, where he can continue to grow in confidence at his own pace.
Douglas has never walked on a lead before, so practice will need to begin in a secure garden until he is ready to venture further. He has a slightly overshot jaw, which doesn’t cause him any problems, and he also had one tooth removed during his neuter. He has a travel document.
Douglas, or “Doodah” as he’s affectionately known in foster is such a special little dog. He has already shown huge courage and made so many small but important steps. With love, patience, and the guidance of a resident dog, he will continue to blossom into the much-loved companion he was always meant to be.
Douglas has had 1 tooth extracted at the time of his neuter. It has been noted that he can occasionally stand with a slightly abnormal gate or kick his leg to the side when he runs. He isn't in any pain with this and it may improve as he builds muscle, but it will need to be monitored by his adopters and their vet as it hasn't had any further investigation. For this reason he is by donation.
Douglas has a travel document.
