  • Human family requirements

I would like a home filled with love and kindness!

  • Other pet requirements

I can live as an only or live with other dogs. I've never met cats so I'm unsure!

  • House and garden requirements

I’m worried and will need a secure garden to learn about being outside.

  • Out and about requirements

I'm still getting used to my new life so a secure garden for me to explore is ideal.

  • Training needs

I need to learn lead training and house manners when I am settled into my new home.

  • Medical issues

I walk low on my hocks and have a Grade 5 heart murmur.

02-10-25 Fred is a sweet standard Dachshund who has come to us from his breeder in search of a fresh start. He has a Grade 5 heart murmur, which is currently being investigated and will require referral to a specialist, so for the moment he isn't ready for adoption. However if someone was interested in adopting him and taking over the medical costs, we may be able to consider this. Fred does also show some signs of walking low on his hocks and has a slightly wobbly gait, but this doesn’t cause him any problems at the moment. The vet feels it should improve with gentle, regular exercise as he builds muscle, though it will need to be monitored by his adopters and their vet.

He can be a little unsure of his new surroundings and the hustle and bustle of rescue life at first, but with gentle encouragement and a kind hand, he soon warms up and enjoys a calm, reassuring fuss.

Fred is a sensitive boy, and first impressions can sometimes be tricky for him. His nerves may make him a little grumbly at times, but a bit of squeezy cheese and a soft voice quickly win him over. Once he knows and trusts you, he shows his true colours, affectionate, playful, and full of character. He’s a spirited little chap who loves to be near his people and has so much love to give once he feels safe.

Like many Dachshunds, Fred has a big personality packed into a small body. He can occasionally guard his food or toys and may growl when he’s sitting on your lap, but this is simply his way of expressing uncertainty. With gentle, consistent guidance and an understanding adopter, this behaviour settles as he learns that he no longer needs to worry about sharing his space or his favourite things.

Fred gets along wonderfully with other dogs and finds great comfort in their company, so we feel he would do best in a home with a friendly canine companion to help show him the ropes. However, he could also be happy as the only dog in the right home, provided his adopters can offer him plenty of patience, structure, and reassurance.

He is currently living in his foster home, where he is learning all of the basics, including house training, lead walking, and the daily routines of family life. Because of his sensitive nature and occasional guarding, Fred is looking for a calm, adult-only home, somewhere peaceful and understanding where he can settle at his own pace.

Fred will need to attend puppy socialisation classes, and his adopters must agree to have him neutered at the appropriate age as per the adoption agreement.

Fred truly is a little dog with a big heart, lively, loving, and full of personality. With time, patience, and kindness, he will blossom into the most loyal and joyful companion. He’s so ready to begin the next chapter of his life with the special people who will see past his worries and love him for the wonderful, spirited boy he is.
