Churro
03-08-25 Churro is a sweet but troubled Shetland Pony Cross who is 8"1hh (33 inches) and arrived with us in April this year. We don’t know much about his history, but when he arrived, he had a huge abscess on his face and was underweight and in poor condition. When he arrived it was clear he had never even been given a treat before, as he had no idea what to do when one was offered to him.
Churro is very good to catch, lead, round pen, and enjoys having a jump. Churro was driven in his previous home, and has been improving with his driving while being with us. He is very interested in people and will follow you around the yard to see what you are doing, and even watches over you while mucking out his stable.
Churro arrived with some issues which we have been working through, but he still has a way to go. He does not trust people and is very sensitive to touch, especially on his back end. Though he has improved since arriving with us and can now tolerate being groomed and having his front feet picked out, he does bite and kick as a defence mechanism when he is pushed too far or the early warning signs are not listened to. For this reason, Churro is NOT a kid’s pony.
Churro needs a very experienced and knowledgeable 5* home with a lot of patience and time to build trust and work through his issues. We know that with understanding and persistence, Churro will give you a lot of love and trust in return. Churro will need to be kept on your own property, with sufficient turnout and a stable where he can be brought in when it’s wet. Churro will need at least one other equine friend. He is currently turned out with geldings, and would prefer to live with a bigger pony or a horse as he prefers the company of horses to other Shetlands. It takes Churro a while to make friends and he can be defensive and squeal, but once he settles, he loves to graze and spend time with other equines.
